In the late 1930s, the need for a new bolt-action rifle became apparent and the No 4 Mk I was officially adopted in 1941. The No 4's mode of action was similar to that of the MK VI, but it was more robust and, above all, easier to mass-produce. Unlike the SMLE, whose barrel protrudes briefly from the muzzle, the barrel of the No 4 protrudes clearly from the front of the rifle. The bottom of the magazine was no longer rounded to facilitate machining. The steel sights were redesigned and included an L-shaped device which, in the folded-down position, featured an eyecup attached to the 300-yard (274m) combat elevation and, in the raised position, a sighting alidade that could be progressively adjusted from 200 to 1,300 yards (183 to 1,189m) in 100-yard (91m) increments. This sight, like other eyepiece sights, proved to be faster to target and more accurate than the system whose rear elements were fixed halfway up the barrel, typical of the Mauser, older Lee-Enfield models or the Buffington model of the American Springfield Mle 1903.
