The 5.56 mm NATO or 5.56 × 45 mm (5.56 × 45 mm NATO in English), standardised in STANAG 4172, is a type of cartridge for assault rifles. The term ‘5.56 NATO’ is the standard military designation for civilian ammunition.
It is a standard calibre among Nato armed forces, as well as those of other non-Nato countries.
