The history:
The result of difficult development, the M16 is the military version of the AR-15, a rifle completed by Armalite in 1958.
The reliability and accuracy of the first version were insufficient and Armalite sold the patents for the weapon to Colt, which received an order for 8,000 weapons to be delivered to the Strategic Air Command forces in 1960. The US Army's research services bought 1,000 more in 1962 and distributed them for testing to South Vietnamese forces. The experiment produced some enthusiastic reports, which led in 1963 to an order for 85,000 units to equip the army under the designation "XM16E1" and a further 19,000 weapons for the air force under the designation "M16". The M16 was officially adopted by the US Air Force in 1964 and the United States Army in 1967.
