Le HK 416 est un fusil d'assaut de la firme allemande Heckler & Koch, une version améliorée de la carabine M4.
À l'origine, il devait être nommé HKM4, mais il fut changé en raison d'un recours en justice de la firme Colt's Manufacturing Company, qui se croyait détentrice des droits commerciaux du M4. Un arrangement à l'amiable a été convenu. Néanmoins il est important de noter que Colt a été débouté suite a un procès intenté par Bushmaster ; M4 a été reconnu comme un terme générique par la justice américaine.
Le terme HK416 est issue du système de référencement interne de Heckler & Koch USA
Le système de piston à emprunt de gaz HK 416 est similaire à celui équipant déjà les fusils HK G36 et remplaçant le système à emprunt de gaz direct utilisé par les M4 et M16. Ce système a été repris de l'AR-18 d'Eugene Stoner et "amélioré".
Il est uniquement disponible pour les agences gouvernementales et les organisations militaires. Il peut être acheté en tant qu'arme complète ou bien en tant que kit comprenant le boîtier de culasse supérieur pour la conversion d'une arme de la famille Colt M4/M16. Il n'est jusqu'à présent pas destiné à la vente aux civils, ce rôle étant dévolu au récent MR223 qui en est étroitement dérivé.
En mars 2009, l'armée de l'air a annoncé qu'elle remplacerait les FA-MAS F1 de ses unités de commandos et de forces spéciales par des HK416 (Cf. Cibles, octobre 2009). La Brigade des Forces Spéciales Terre (BFST) est équipée de HK416 depuis 2007. Le HK 416 serait envisagé, selon certains, comme un des remplaçants possible du FA-MAS dans l'armée de terre.[2]
