History:
There are two differences between the M16 and the M4, their size and the automatic mode present on the M4 in contrast to the M16 which is semi-automatic / burst (except declensions). The M4A1 is a shortened version of the M16A4 with a 14.5-inch (368 mm) long barrel and telescopic buttstock. This includes a part of the mechanism of the rifle, the stick can be shortened by one third of its length but can not be fully retracted as on other rifles assault. Its other features are identical to those of the M16A4 (NATO 5.56 mm caliber, fire safety selector, single shot or automatic burst of 3).
This weapon equips the units that do not need the range of an M16 thus free from its size. This is particularly the case of vehicle crews, gunners and some officers but also some special troops for whom a light weapon guarantees better mobility and maneuverability. (Source Wikipedia)
